About this site and your privacy

What this is

Texas School Open Records is an independent transparency project. It helps people file Texas Public Information Act requests with any Texas public school district or open-enrollment charter and publishes each request, the district's response, and the records it sends. It is operated by the site’s owners, independently of school districts and government agencies.

User responsibility and acceptable use

Users are responsible for the content they submit, including its accuracy, legality, and the decision to send it. Users must review any template or AI-assisted draft before submitting it. Requests and user replies represent the submitting user's statements, not the views or endorsement of this site or its owners.

This service is for civil requests for existing public records and related clarification, cost, status, and withdrawal messages. Threats, encouragement of violence, harassment, profanity, intimidation, and other abusive or unrelated use are prohibited. We use automated screening and moderation measures to reduce abuse, but cannot guarantee that every inappropriate message will be detected. We may hold or refuse delivery and restrict or remove content that violates these rules.

Questions about a request's content

Direct questions, objections, and requests for clarification about a user's submission to that requester by replying to the request email. The relay routes the reply into the request thread for the requester to read and answer; replies are published. Do not include confidential information. Requesters can respond through their accounts without disclosing a private email address.

Limits of responsibility

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, this site and its owners disclaim liability arising from content submitted by users or from users' misuse of the service. Providing drafting tools, screening messages, transmitting requests, or publishing responses does not constitute endorsement of user content. Nothing in this notice excludes responsibility that applicable law does not allow us to exclude, limits anyone's statutory rights, or changes a district's obligations under the Texas Public Information Act.

What becomes public

Everything you write in a request or reply, every message from the district, and every file it sends. Do not put your real name, contact details, a student's name or ID, or anything else you want private in a request. Requests that appear to contain personal information are held for a moderator before anything is sent.

Privacy and data

Optional AI drafting sends draft text to OpenAI. Before district delivery, an automatic safety and records-scope check also sends the outgoing subject and message, to OpenAI. Account passwords, private account email addresses, and requester IP addresses are not included in these checks. Do not type private information into public requests. We request no stored response (store:false); provider security retention may still apply. AI drafts are not sent automatically. Template drafting works without AI, but district delivery requires a successful safety check. Messages that are abusive, threatening, unrelated to records, uncertain, or unable to be checked remain unsent.

Sign in with a username and password. Your account username is not displayed on public requests or included in our district email templates. Email is optional and stays private. If you provide it, we use it for password reset links and update alerts. Without email, a forgotten password cannot be reset and you must return to your account to check for replies. Google sign-in is not enabled. Requests remain linked to their accounts privately so you can manage them. Public pages do not include requester account identifiers or a cross-request author profile.

The application does not record visitor IP addresses, run analytics, or write request contents to application logs. Directory suggestions use private receipts instead of an account attribution. Essential session and receipt cookies keep sign-in and submission status working.

Hosting, domain, and email providers process connection, account, and delivery information under their own policies. Their records and backups are outside this application’s control. Public writing, district replies, and document metadata may identify people. Removing account attribution cannot guarantee that a person cannot be identified from what they write or from records returned by a district.

Timelines

Response milestones are estimates based on recorded receipt, classified messages, and verified nonbusiness dates. Clarification, withholding, and other statutory rules may change the applicable deadline. An AG ruling notice or partial production does not mean the request has been fulfilled. This summary is for general information and is not legal advice. The statute controls; follow the links to read it.

Student records

Records about individual students are generally confidential under federal and state law. The district will likely withhold them, and requests for them do not belong on a public site. Parents can request their own child's records directly from the school.

Where district information comes from

District names, locations, and websites come from the Texas Education Agency's public AskTED directory. The address each district designates for public information requests is checked against the Texas Attorney General's public contact database or the district's own website before any request is sent to it.

Removal

Use “Report personal information” on a request to flag a privacy concern. Reports do not require an account and do not record a reporter’s identity. Moderators can hide the request and its files. Copies already downloaded or held by districts and service providers are outside this site’s control.
